Webster Technique Overview

Pregnant women and the babes growing inside them face unique physical challenges during their nine month journey together. The Webster Chiropractic Technique is a safe and effective therapy that is used by many moms to help them accommodate for the changing demands on their bodies.

The Webster Chiropractic Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment.  The goal of this adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral/sacro-iliac (SI) joint dysfunction.  In so doing, the neuro-biomechanical function of the pelvis is facilitated.  In this clinical and theoretical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may cause the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments.  It is these tense muscle and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus which may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for the birthing process.

In pregnancy, our growing belly leads to numerous biomechanical adaptations in our entire spine and pelvis.  Muscles and ligaments may become stressed and spinal structure and function may be compromised more easily. When the sacrum, (the triangular bone in your pelvis) becomes fixated, uneven pulling via pelvic ligaments may cause tension in your uterus as well. This imbalance may affect the space in the uterus and restrict the free movement of the baby causing what is known as :intrauterine constraint. Intrauterine constraint may affect the optimal development of your baby's cranium, spine, and other skeletal structures

Even more importantly, this compromised uterine space may affect your baby's ability to move into the best possible position for birth. Intrauterine constraint of the baby caused by imbalanced muscles and ligaments may be one reason why a baby is “stuck” in a malposition (such as: breech, transvers, or even posterior). We know that when a mother has a malpositioned baby, the mother may require a C-section. Even if the baby is in a head down position, if the head is not correctly lined up at birth, the process of birth may be slowed down in labor. When labor does not proceed as anticipated, interventions are resorted. Optimal baby positioning is essential for an easier labor and safer birth.

A Doctor of Chiropractic certified in the Webster Technique has acquired specific chiropractic adjusting skills to address this type of sacral misalignment. It is optimal to receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy so pelvic balance can be achieved and optimal function can be restored. Even women initiating chiropractic care in the second or third trimester can benefit greatly from regular chiropractic adjustments. Regardless of the stage of the pregnancy or the presentation of the infant, pelvic imbalances, intrauterine constraint, and maternal discomfort may be present.  For this reason, chiropractic care using the Webster Technique is a wonderful adjunctive procedure for any pregnant mom.  By making sure that all your muscles and joints are doing their very best to accommodate for the new biomechanical stresses being placed on them with your growing belly and changing body, we are able to ensure the safest and most comfortable situation for both mom-to-be and baby.
