Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a group of manual procedures directed to the sutures of the skull designed to enhance the functioning of the membranes, tissues, fluids, and bones surrounding or associated with the brain and spinal cord. It is postulated that low-force pressure can influence the vitality of the Cranial Rhythmic Impulse created by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid as it moves from the ventricles of the skull to the sacrum within the spinal cord (1). CST as a treatment system focuses on amplifying the Parasympathetic (Thrive) Division of the nervous system by supporting structural and bioenergetic balance throughout the whole body.
"Cranio" means head and "sacral" refers to the sacrum. These two integral poles of your spine house a very important part of your Autonomic Nervous System and are tethered together through the dural-meningeal system. The dural-meningeal system is a fascial (or connective tissue) framework that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, is connected with other fascial structures, and plays an integral role in tissue health and nervous system function. It houses the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord, providing nutrients and eliminating waste.
Fancy anatomy aside, CranioSacral Therapy can be helpful for a wide variety of conditions as it supports your basic thrive-based functions. It is often used in conjunction with other therapies (like chiropractic care and cognitive behavioural therapy) to facilitate emotional processing, healing, and release.

There are many different technique systems under the umbrella of CST. RMT Kristin Jones has done extensive training under the BioDynamic CranioSacral system (2). RMT Jen Cuddington has done multiple courses under Upledger Institute (3). Both of these RMTs work with infants, children, and adults who are seeking CST. Our chiropractors Dr. Anna Marie and Dr. Amanda do primarily SOT-based CST and work with infants and kids only (4).
