Q&A: Chiropractor Doctor
Our bodies (and bones, in particular) model in response to outside physical stresses placed upon them (a concept known as Wolff’s Law). Proper joint motion and coordination is needed to distribute these forces for optimal bone development. There are periods of time when skeletal growth is accelerated (commonly referred to as Growth Spurts) during which balance and proper function in the muscles and joints are especially important.
Just like the bones of the skeleton, your child’s nervous system is also developing at a rapid rate. The nervous system includes the brain, the spinal cord, and all the millions of nerves that serve every inch of your body and control most of its functions. Just like the bones need proper joint movement for optimal development, so do the nerves in order to develop optimal communication and control. Communication and proprioceptive feedback, is especially important during the growing years.
YES. ALL of our amazing chiropractors are specialized in helping woman before, during and after pregnancy.
The “pop” noise that is sometimes heard with certain types of adjustments is caused by a gapping of the facet joint when a quick impulse is applied in the area. Think of the “smack” noise created by pulling a suction cup off a window; the air vacuum release creates a little pop. It’s the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. The noise in and of itself is benign. Some adjustment types make a popping sound and others don’t. Some people like to hear it and others don;t; we always take into consideration patient preference when choosing which form of manual therapy to provide.
An initial exam with an AltaVie Health chiropractor is one hour long. During your first visit, we will take a thorough history, complete a physical exam, and provide treatment with consent. This is the same for adult, child, and infant visits.
Q&A: Preconception Naturpathic Medicine
Natural fertility treatment involves various therapies to complement the conventional fertility approach. Many factors get overlooked when couples are facing difficulty on their road to conception, so we make sure to look at the whole picture to understand better how to support your unique situation.
The most common factors we consider to improve fertility include:
- Weight management for fertility
- Dietary habits to improve fertility
- Egg & sperm quality
- Detoxification
- Hormone balance, cycle charting & ensuring ovulation
- Reducing inflammation
- Stress management
- Improving sleep
Whether you’re trying naturally or working with a fertility clinic, spending up to 3 months in preparation using naturopathic approaches aids in this amazing journey.
Naturopathic medicine can be used as a tool to complement treatments that result in infertility such as:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids & polyps
- Ovarian cysts
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Hypothyroidism
- Obesity
- PCOS
- Hormone imbalance and irregular menstrual cycles
- Stress
- Toxicity
- Low sperm quantity and quality
- Low egg quality
Absolutely. While assisted reproductive technology ensures the creation and implantation of embryos, naturopathic therapies focus on improving the quality of those embryos which is equally important. We do this by working with couples a few months before egg retrieval to improve egg and sperm quality. Incorporating acupuncture to support assisted cycles improves outcomes as well.
Acupuncture is effective during the entire reproductive cycle. We recommend including acupuncture during the preconception period, and throughout the egg retrieval, transfer, implantation and two week wait period.
The benefits of acupuncture for fertility include:
- improved blood flow to the ovaries and improved endometrial lining
- improved response to medicated cycles
- reduced stress hormone production
- promotion of optimal environment for implantation
- Treatment for irregular cycles, PCOS and endometriosis

Q&A: Acupuncture Information
Acupuncture helps with many reproductive conditions. The needles stimulate the nervous system to send messages to the brain that change the hormonal output from the brain to the ovaries and uterus.
For example, there is a point on the hand that has the effect of calming down the sympathetic nervous system and reducing nervous tension. This in turn allows blood flow to return to the digestive and reproductive organs and has the effect of improving digestion and reducing both abdominal and menstrual pain. So we say the point improves digestion and eliminates pain in the abdomen.
Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used for centuries to treat various conditions, including reproductive and fertility concerns. The needles stimulate various points along energetic pathways called "meridians" and are used to stimulate a person's energy,
Postpartum acupuncture has many benefits for our postpartum patients. However, it’s important to get the green-light from your physician or midwife before receiving your first postnatal acupuncture treatment. Some of our patients can have acupuncture 1-2 weeks after having a baby, while others may be advised to wait longer.
No, acupuncture shouldn’t hurt. In fact, when we are using it to affect the hormonal system, it needs to be gentle in order to be most effective.
The most useful points on the body are below the elbows and below the knees and often we only use a few points in a treatment.
Q&A: All things Massage Therapy
You can come for treatment as soon as you feel able to. In the case of a cesarean birth we won't directly treat your scar for 6-8 weeks, and may position you on the table differently for comfort, but can still treat any other symptoms immediately postpartum.
The biggest difference is positioning on the table. Once it is uncomfortable to lay on your stomach, we adjust positioning to either a supported stomach position (with pillowing system or special pregnancy table) or side lying position. We also tend to avoid deep treatment to the low back and abdomen and take into consideration the different stressors on your body throughout the trimesters.
Yes. We have special pillows and a specific pregnancy massage table to make your massage as comfortable as possible for you and your growing belly. Our massage therapists have specialized training in working with women during pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
Q&A: Registered Dietician
In Canada, a Registered Dietitian is a protected title just like a physician, nurse, or pharmacist. Dietitians undergo many years of schooling and hands on training in order to become qualified to be a practicing health care professional. Nutritionists, on the other hand, do not need to undergo any training as the title is not protected – in short, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Dietitians are held to the highest standard of education and ethics to provide evidence based and up to date information and health advice.
Dieticians work with individuals, families, communities, and at the population level to support healthy living. Dietitians deliver reliable and life changing advice that is individualized and tailored to meet your objectives, personal needs and challenges. Dietitians take the research and science and translate it into actionable advice that you can understand.
When looking at functional, sustainable, and long term health, there really are no “good” and “bad” foods. There is space for all foods to fit in a sustainable eating pattern. It is important to allow yourself to be realistic with nutrition goals, and for that reason we do not discourage certain foods or food groups in general. Much of nutrition work is “for the most part” eating, you cannot expect yourself to eat perfectly 100% of the time.
NO! Dairy products in general, including milk, cheese, and yogurt are a convenient way to get calcium in the diet, but they are not the only way. Fortified milk alternatives contain calcium (look on the nutrition facts table for calcium), as well as canned fish with the bones. Additionally, kale, almonds, white beans, and tofu contain calcium. You do not need to include dairy products or milk in your diet to get calcium, but you need to be mindful about including other food sources of calcium in your diet!
No! It may come as a surprise to hear this, but you actually don’t NEED to take a prenatal to meet your nutrition needs in pregnancy. In fact, you can meet your needs much better through eating real foods than what is provided in a pill. Pregnancy is an incredibly important time for proper nutrition, but each person will have different needs based on their nutrition status. It is best to see a Registered Dietitian to find out what that might look like for you.
Several studies have found that nutrition is important in controlling hormones. So, if you are in the perimenopausal or menopausal stage, it is critical that you begin thinking about how nutrition might help to reduce those symptoms and maintain hormonal health. A study of 400 menopausal women published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information on Dietary Patterns and their Association with Menopausal Symptoms discovered that eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables daily helps to reduce aggressive menopausal symptoms. A four-year study published in The Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health included 914 menopausal women aged 40 to 65 years. This study indicated that a diet strong in oily fish, fresh legumes, and folate-rich foods helps to ease symptoms and age at natural menopause, whereas a diet rich in refined carbs such as rice, pasta, and processed foods is known to induce the beginning of menopause to occur earlier.
- Highly processed foods (All packaged and ready-to-eat foods).
- Added sugar.
- Refined carbohydrates (pasta, rice, or potatoes).
- Alcohol above the recommended limits.
- Spicy foods.
- Menopausal symptoms trigger foods such as tea and coffee.
- Foods high in saturated fat.
Weight gain has been attributed to both biological aging and the menopause transition in midlife women. It has been proven that a 5% reduction in body weight relative to the initial weight results in a range of health benefits, including reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride level. During and after menopause, a healthy lifestyle intervention is critical, and it should include dietary changes based on the needs of the patients.
