Postnatal Rehab

Postnatal Recovery & Rehabilitation

IMG_2806The arrival of a new baby is a very exciting time. There are so many new joys and warm snuggly feelings. But there’s a catch… in the midst of all the baby bliss, you need to remember (and make time) to take care of yourself.

Life with a new baby can quickly shift from the most magical experience of your life to a time of insurmountable physical and emotional stress.  You body has just performed miracles.  It has put up with the biomechanical burdens of increasing weight, shifting centre of gravity, and ligament laxity.  If has survived the extreme sporting event of child birth. In some cases, you may have even undergone major surgery. And now, as your body is trying to put itself back together, you are carrying around a squirmy little sack of potatoes roughly 20 hours a day, hunching over to feed it, and not sleeping. Being a mom is magical, but it’s not easy!

At AltaVie Integrated Family Health, our postnatal care and rehabilitation program is designed to help stay healthy, feel good, get strong, and avoid injury while meeting (and exceeding) the unique demands of motherhood. Whether your goal is to be able to lower baby gently into her crib without excruciating pain or to run your first half marathon since your motherly transformation, we can help you get back to your activities and to feeling good, safely.

Some Common Postnatal Concerns Include:

  • Mid and Upper Back Pain & Stiffness
  • Headaches & Jaw Pain
  • Wrist Pain or Tingling/Numbness
  • Low Back, Hip, and Sciatic Pain
  • Weakness or Separation of the Abdominal & Pelvic Floor Musculature (including Diastases Recti)
  • Incontinence or Discomfort While Going to the Bathroom or Having Sex

Who Can Benefit from Postnatal Rehabilitation?

BirdDogEvery mom! (& probably some dads…) Anyone who has grown another human being in their belly and given birth can benefit from a specific program of exercises and manual care designed to regain strength and stability. Each program is tailored to the unique needs of the individual - whether you gave birth vaginally or via a C-section, whether you just had your first or are on baby number 5.

How soon after having a baby should I begin?

We recommend that every mom and baby be checked by a experienced practitioner after birth. Each case is unique, however, if you have had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, it is safe to begin gentle, low impact exercise as soon as you feel ready. Our programs begin with gentle exercise and low impact activities that are designed for your individual goals and needs.  It is never too early or too late to come in for you first assessment.

How we can Help!

The AltaVie Postnatal Program uses a customized blend of chiropractic care, soft tissue techniques, kinesiology taping, and exercise rehab.  It is safe and effective.  We understand the challenges (time, access to equipment, toddlers and pets underfoot, etc.) that come with having a new baby and we will work with you to find solutions that are realistic and achievable in your personal situation.
